This is a story that is all too familiar. I wonder why stories that are familiar can’t be happy and joyous stories. They always seem to be just painful, gut-wrenching awful stories. For Mets fans, the familiar stories happen way too often and this one is my least favorite; probably because it’s happening to my favorite Met since Darryl Strawberry. David Wright is hurt…again.
Wright has been struggling throwing the ball so far in Spring Training and a few tests revealed that was a result of a shoulder impingement. His shoulder muscles have not caught up to the lack of activity since his neck surgery. Don’t forget the closest thing to a real life Mr. Met also has spinal stenosis which limited him last season. In fact, he hasn’t played a full, healthy season since 2012.
After first hearing this news, although it was not a shocker, was still heart wrenching. David Wright is a stand up guy, a great ball player when healthy, and the ultimate face of the franchise for the Mets. After early team success, he has dealt with so much bullshit from awful seasons. It’s just so sad to see the team be pretty successful and Wright not be able to enjoy that.
Speaking of the team’s success: I am now worried. Wright is hurt, Duda’s back is doing who knows what, and the team didn’t sign anyone new to the team this year. Josè Reyes was pretty solid at third last year, but who knows how long that’s going to last. If Conforto or Jay Bruce can play first, then I won’t completely freak out. Remember, this team always seems to have a TON of injuries and two other starters (Walker and Cabrera) are coming off injuries. This doesn’t even take into account the constant barrage of injuries that the rotation has had to deal with in the past few years.
The window for the Mets to win a World Series is a tight one. It doesn’t help that the Cubs have already got one and don’t seem to be slowing down. If too many injuries pop up again this season, then the window closes even more and it gets closer and closer to me never celebrating a Mets World Series. SAD!
