I saw this tweet last night when I was writing about the USMNT, but I wanted to wait until today so that I could really dive into this. I understand that the actual likelihood of a trade is very small. However, as a Giants fan, I don’t HATE the idea.
The New York Giants are in a weird position. They entered the season with hopes of making a deep run in the playoffs. The defense was solid last year and the team hoped the addition of Brandon Marshall and Evan Engram would put their offense over the top. However, Jerry Reese being stubborn and not admitting that his OL picks haven’t worked out (I’m FUCKING looking at you Erick Flowers!!!) really has set this team back offensively. Reese’s inability to pay attention to the linebackers is what kills them on the defensive side.
So, now the team is 0-5 and looking towards a possible 0-7 start. Injuries have wiped out the WRs. The Bus Driver, Ben McAdoo, has seemed to have lost control as DRC is now suspended and it looks like this thing can snowball. The season can turn really ugly and how NY decides to play this hand will affect the franchise for years to come.
The Giants have to make a choice. They can decide to go for it with Eli one more time next season. Sign a couple linebackers and maybe a DB, draft a stud OL, and try to win a third Super Bowl. The other possibility is to blow the thing up and start over. On the defensive side you can build around Landon Collins, Janoris Jenkins, and Olivier Vernon. Offensively everything goes around OBJ and Sterling Shepard.
If the Giants decide to trade Eli, it’s got to be for multiple picks over the next two years. You’d then let Davis Webb see what he can do. If you don’t like what you see, you can use the early pick on a QB to develop. If you like what Webb offers, then go with the model that the Jags used to put them in position to trade for Eli in the first place.
I don’t know if I want the Giants to trade Eli Manning. I’m afraid if that’s the case, they’ll let Jerry Reese and Ben McAdoo stick around. McAdoo has no control and Reese should have been the one gone instead of Coughlin. Trading Eli may not be the best route, but it is a thought.
